So, I'm interested in trying the game out. I've never played Island Defense, so I have no idea how it works. Does anyone have any recommendations in what guides I should read into?

These 3 cover most of the essential skills/knowledge, only other obvious thing to know is how to wall bases:
LumberingWalling middleTitan buildsI suggest learning Gnoll and Pirate builders first. Avoid any Pirate upgrade that mentions explosives or incidiaries, they are bugged and do nothing.
Another thing, don't get too addicted to Builder. Many public players refuse to play Titan after losing on their first try, so they are only able to master the basic Builder skills. Knowing how to play Titan teaches you how Titan players think, which actually improves your Builder skills.
I suggest learning Moltenious and Bubonicus Titans first. Molt with his high dps and strong heal dominates throughout the entire game, despite its description as an early game Titan. Bub is the only Titan with a critical hit windwalk which is nice, but his main draw is his minion's heals. The cooldown is much shorter than almost every other Titan's minions. His own heal is rather weak compared to Molt's though, so Molt is less dependant on minions than Bub.

Pick the builders which are categorized as "Easy".

I honestly would host a private game with you and go over the basics of how to play. Although I wouldn't be able to do so for a week or so (on vacation). The best way to really learn how to play is to play with other people who know how to play. Pretty much what ATree explains in his BTI sister clan idea. Look at how they wall, set up lumber bases, base and just how they play in general and pick up on what they do. You could also watch replays of good players and see what they do. (Definitely make sure you pick up on good players, though, and not the habits of pubs)
You WILL get flamed by pubs for being bad, but just troll them back.
Stop by Clan BTI@east whenever to get tips from clan members and to play games with us. Most of us should be relatively good.

^ "watch good replays": Check out the replay section and watch In-House games.

@BouncingHitman If you're on East, add me. My username is ATree, and just pm whenever you see me online. I just got back from a vacation and am more than willing to help you out. I know this game can be rather confusing and hard at first, but once you get the hang of it and know what's going on, it's really fun.
I'm also going to be creating a clan shortly here in the near future solely for the purpose of players just like you that want to learn how to play. Again if you're interested just let me know. ^^

That's because ID needs more players! We will always be supportive of new players who actually want to learn. ID community is nice to these players because they come across as a rarity these days, whereas DotA players have them in abundance.
Seriously though, highly recommending this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0esPil8DzM.
1) You don't have to read anything
2) It has EVERYTHING you need. Hell, if you can do everything in that video, you'd be able to participate in inhouses. That's how easy Island Defense is, Island Defense is a hell of a lot easier game than compared to DotA. If you play like you want to be the best, you can come to be the best. BTI can also help you get there if you're still interested.

If you do badly after you have learned how to play, you will get flamed. Badly.
Especially by me.
