Why I prefer no fog of war in 1v1

Postby punzer » Thu Nov 06, 2014 11:43 pm

It's more like chess. You have all the information that's out there, except what's in the other person's head. You just have to play smart.

There's less gambling. There is certainly an art to smart sending with mm, but a lot of luck too. Some people say you should try to guess what the other player has based on their kill rate, but I find this to be undoable. Maybe I'm just bad it it though.

Some people say without fog of war the game results in boring, deterministic play based on which towers players happen to get. There's a sense in which this is true, but notice there's also a sense in which it's true for chess. Okay, maybe play is more restricted in legion, and so full visibility is more deterministic in legion than it is in chess, but I still think legion is complicated enough that the theoretical deterministic gameplay is beyond us. Additionally, the fact that you have a better idea of when your opponent will send (when you are clearly weak) can actually lead to more game theory / advanced strategies. For instance, in certain cases it may make sense to admit your weakness and going heavy income rather than hope they don't send. Or you can intentionally make it look like you'll be weak on a certain level until the last second and build that tank, screwing up their sending plans.

Plus, it makes legion more interactive. People talk about each other's builds. This social aspect is really missing from 1v1.

I think the downside to this is that it's waaaay to roll based
If one guy got strong towers for pretty much all lvls pre 10 and the other guy is weak on 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 or 8 or several of these it's game over without fog

What I don't like about no fog is that it's all down to what you do in the last 2 seconds of the round. whether to overbuild, send, sell then rebuild something else etc. too much micromanagement for a chilled out game like Ltd for me

Please don't compare Legion with chess. In chess both parties have the same 'towers' and in Legion you don't.
Some OP (for early) towers will have even bigger advantages. Some towers, like Hydras/Yggdrasil/Spawn and so on require saving during one round. That means they are weak during one round. Risking alchemists solo for lvl 1 is too dangerous now. A typial archer or aqua player will have the biggest advantage ever. They can play with one less wisp during early levels (1-4) and keep their wood for levels 5-8.
And biggest upset imo is that the sender has 2-3 seconds more than the builder. Once you cannot build anymore, there are still 2-3 seconds where you can send. Which is silly in that mode.
Like Krumme said, this will be totally roll-based. Guessing what your opponent's towers are is an aspect of the game imo. Sometimes a mistake in that can cost you the game. I made my opponent leak on 1 and 5, was dead sure was playing against engineers, and I sent on 8, because king-skill was immolation, as I saw during lvl 5. Well, I was wrong and I played vs aquas and I just fed my opponent ~500 wood...

So here's an instance that came up yesterday while I was playing with no fog. https://entgaming.net/findstats.php?id=4604691

I was up against kill_noob, who is way better than me, and on top of that he gets aqua. This is typically considered early round OP, right? Except that heavy aqua builds are weak on 7. Well, he was thinking that he it made and went heavy lumber, but I, knowing this, saved big for 7 and send 2 BO, furb, and doctor, and won it there.

My point being that there IS a sense in which no fog is more "roll-based" (in my earlier statement, it's more deterministic), but its roll-based in a very complicated, unexplored way. The above game may show that aqua is LESS OP without fog than it is with fog. You might counter that kill_noob screwed up, which in retrospect is true of course, but my point is that what is a mistake is far less clear without fog than the "roll-based" argument supposes.

I agree with hutzu and so on, that this would be to rolldependedm and u even say this in your own argument. If you got just aquas, and its no fog, enemy will always send 7 and the only way for you to hold would require such a hard ob, that you cant have whisps and send for your own, so there would be no way to win ...
And you kinda wouldnt be allowed to do anything between the lvl´s, except in the last seconds, that is a problem aswell.

Fog of war is an amazing element to this game. Why take it away and make things more obvious?

Anyway, nothing wrong with having a "preference".

Yeah, all good points. Again I agree things become more obvious in some sense, but I think things are still phenomenally complicated. I think it calls for completely different strategies in an interesting way, but yes, just a preference. And for the record, I almost never pick this mode because everyone hates on me for it :)

well. it would be funny from time to time maybe, but not more often :D
i think its kinda another game. more mind-games with the enemy and more speed you need, but less thinking about your own towers i would say.

p.s.: if you pick non-fog mode without saying it before, you can get banned ^^ actually i dont know you do it or not ... just saying

Yeah I always ask first (after a couple times where I made people mad, should have asked). Although I would take you up on your comment about not having to think as much about your own towers with no fog.
