i read another post saying something about joining certain games makes you lag out no matter what unless you exit out of WC3.. maybe hthat was the issue? if so what maps should i avoid playing?

Well, this happen when you play castlefight, however you can prevent the desync restarting your wc3. I don't think it's your problem.
