I'm facing a few hour leaver ban, so not really a big deal, BUT I do think it's ridiculous that I got banned for this game. I joined an APEM game. Not an AREM game. When the game started, it was AREM. So I left.

When someone leaves after a game mode is changed, they should not be penalized.

You had enough time to leave the lobby when the game mode was announced as AREM. You chose to leave the game when you shouldn't have.

Fair enough. To be honest, I had no idea the game type COULD be changed.

I don't play enough to know that modes COULD be changed, as I thought they were static.

You can vote for the mode in DotA by typing, !mode APEM, !mode AREM, etc., If enough players vote for X mode, it will be that mode.
