I really don't think wc3 will die off anytime soon it's the same idea as diablo 2 / lod and so on so forth it will always have it's loyal fanbase if anything only certain maps will die off just dependent on the community. I mean some loyal dota players will still play d1 even though they are playing d2.

If you could take out Dota / Legion TD / (one other popular game, w.e you want)... There will be like nobody on this game... These custom game changed WC3, Icefrog especially keep wc3 alive with his update of dota maps, new hero, balancing stuff etc... Without this game, I won't even had WC3 installed I guess. I play some other custom game to kill time but... This is nothing.

I've went into a shop and asked for the game (WC3)... They only said : We do not sell it anymore, only people that want the game are people that played it in the past.

He also add : If you had never played the game before, you won't even ask me to have it right? You would ask for D3/SC2/WoW etc... I said yea you're probably right.

And he was right, only people that play this are the 'fan' or people that love the old DOTA and not the NEW DOTA 2 crap shit... Sorry for Legion TD player and such. But everyone that play LoL and such, know that dota exist, but they prefer to have it free (LoL/downloadable games) instead of shoping an old games.

Though you are right about retail stores not selling WC3 anymore, you can still buy the game digitally online. It's also much cheaper than the ones you would find in retail stores that still sell WC3. But then again with PvPGN's and Garena, there are a more reason to not buy the game than buy it.

I disagree Nutz, I bought the game 3 years ago after the game was already 8 years old and my brother bought it 4 years ago after it was 7 years old. There still are latecomers to the game, they just aren't as frequent.

You didn't shop it like OH I want this GAME. You didn't went to the shop FOR THAT GAME especially. (Maybe I'm wrong) So you probably saw a friend playing the game or someone told you about it etc. THEN you went to shop IT especially.

I've bought it like 4-5 years ago personaly but I knew what was the game (playing at friend house 2 years before). If you never hear (heard maybe is the good typing) of WC3 you won't go and shop it (searching for it). 1-3% will say, oh I'll try that game, it looks cool. Today, you can't find WC3 or you hardly find it. So unless someone shop you the game, talk to you about it, or that you had played in the past.. no one will go and shop it. WoW/LoL and even Dota2 are to much popular.. It's like shoping SC1. You want to play online, no one, you bought it for nothing.... Hence the reason these OLD game are hard to find in shop now... They don't want to sell a product that is hard to sell and to sell it and dissapoint the person who bought it.

i.e : I shop SC1 (that's looks cool, not bad, 2013). Coming home, installing. LETS PLAY ONLINE.... Creating a game. Waiting 1 hours, no one join, maybe only ONE.... WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT GAME!... I'm mad, pretty mad. Wasted money.

Although most retail stores don't sell WC3 anymore, blizzard still sells digital copies for a much cheaper price than you would find it stores that still sell them

Doesn't matter what the supply is when there is no demand. Demand is pretty much inelastic anyway.

I'd say the reason for people still playing WC3 is that no real alternatives exist. SC2 might be of the same genre but has a really different setting. Also it doesn't come anywhere close to WC3's wealth of models, making it difficult to create something interesting and diverse.

Thus I'm pretty sure that something like WC4 would close WC3 down. As long as it is just a modernized "version" of WC3, retaining its large amount of diverse models and easy to use editor.

In other word, make a WC3 with better graphics and motherboard. Better animation and effects. Also, pre-add with map creator some game inside wc3 such Dota/Legion td etc... So editor doesn't have to remake the entire maps and hero... You know, if wc4 come out, you have to re-make your map... wich is way to long.. That would kill dota1 and most of good custom game wc3 got...

Yea if it wasn't for ENT i most likely wouldn't be playing wc3, not very many players but the game is honestly a classic.

I'd say the reason for people still playing WC3 is that no real alternatives exist.

It's basically a mock of the WC3 engine anyway but in a constant developmental stage, so as someone with no map making experience, I believe that if DotA2 made a decent world editor, then it could obtain an incredibly useful custom game franchise.

Heroes of Newerth has the best/fastest engine and a kinda nice map editor. There are already some decent custom maps, but sadly S2 (the creators) moved away from their plans of allowing custom maps and thus they can't be officially played at the moment, but there's an "illegal" way to play custom maps on the official servers which S2 seems to tolerate.

Give me the map of dota. I don't do a TD with it... I'm sorry but you can have an editor in anything, that's not what I've meant. But for what ? For me it is a waste of time on such game. If you want to make a game, make it... Write the line and code. Create the models etc. Don't bother other to make an editor for you... People want to much something right in their hand all made. That's my opinion. wc3 will live only for one reason : fan from the past. Nothing else.
